The first half of 2016 has been rather disappointing: the big summer movies, huge and powerful blockbusters were mostly a painful fiasco, movies ranging from the unpresentable ( Batman v Superman, Independence Day ) to mediocre (X-Men : Apocalypse).

Forget blockbusters, 2016 will be rescued by the small films, low budget, some even found favor even being commercially released in the cinema but definitely captured our imagination, our pleasure and our astonishment.

For the preparation of this list were taken into account commercial release in film clubs or even on digital platforms without being properly released in theaters all from the first of January 2016 until today. Some movies on this list were released in the US last year but this year came to our country to commercial billboard so were also considered. You can watch these movies for free on movie4k

What are your favorite movies of 2016 so far?

  1. Zootopia – Dir: Byron Howard and Rich Moore

Sometimes or better a film is not its façade but hidden content, that smuggling after a friendly face manages to sneak certain authorial obsessions, riskier ideas, or are even able to camouflage a whole genre behind the mask of a simple, simple family film. That happens with Zootopia ; behind the facade of an optimistic film and inclusive message homage is discovered to film noir hard-boiled 40s, with large cinéphiles references (all that sequence homage to The Godfather ) and an odd couple (the Hopps rabbit and Nick fox) that are not only endearing but one can not help thinking that both should finish everything with a kiss.


  1. louder than bombs – Dir: Joachim Trier

Juggler assembly. In the film Joachim Trier (yes, it is a relative of von Trier), time is relative: the same restart three or four times his film jumping from reality to what you think a character in a snap. The objective becomes subjective to one trick: the issue. Thus, Trier makes soap opera is a drama that seemed, in a remarkable exercise in style which is complicated not leave without some astonishment.

  1. Hail Caesar! – Dir: Joel Coen & Ethan

Some find this tape of the Coen brothers less film, but it is undeniable that this looting / homage to classics of the forties and fifties (from the music of Gene Kelly to the epic Roman through the western and more) is not only one of the funniest movies of the year but an irresistible set of references to classic films where what matters is not nostalgia but the honor and recognition of Hollywood not as a vile business, but as one of the largest companies engaged in make art. Watch the movie also on putlocker .

  1. 10 Cloverfield Lane – Dir: Dan Trachtenberg

Claustrophobia, containment, mystery. 10 Cloverfield Lane  is a thriller deftly executed panting. An elegant piece of filmmaking that works just the simplicity of its plot, the directness of its armed and really amazing performances (John Goodman deserve an Oscar the coming year). An exercise on paranoia and terror otherness that sounds almost a political commentary in an America that struggles with another madman who insists that the monster is out and it would be better arm themselves behind a wall.

  1. Jungle Book – Dir: Jon Favreau

With Jungle Book is likely to Favreau is laying the foundations of a new era for Disney, an era devoid of authorial impulses but is armed with consciousness, with a script that focuses on lightness, humor, visual spectacle and above all, the development of history and depth in their characters.

Jungle Book is the return to big cinema event, one that – not technology – matter can only be experienced in film and reaches its greatness not by the power of the machine but by human impulses that are transmitted through it. A new way of make believe .

  1. Son of Saul – Dir: László Nemes

Based on repetition, film about the Holocaust has become almost a genre. With his debut, Nemes just seems to say: talk about these issues should not be a safe and comfortable ride that live behind the safety net which is a distant camera. Few issues require much honesty as the Holocaust and Nemes here how to do it, to portray hell and make us share but always from a vision beyond reproach while brutal. A nightmare about the horror of humanity.

  1. CREED – Dir: Ryan Coogler

Coogler ago with the Rocky saga what JJ Abrams could not do with the Star Wars Saga. Both Creed and The Force Awakens are the seventh episode of a convalescent franchise, both have fuel the seventies nostalgia, but Coogler, unlike Abrams, understands that this is not about reliving step by step the scenes and circumstances of the past, Coogler bet on their characters, emotion and above all elegance. A hard – hitting knockout.

  1. The Witch – Dir: Robert Eggers

The Witch has the luxury of being an original film in a genre whose livelihood is based on repetition. The Witch is the return to primal horror, that of stories that were told around a campfire, is the terror caused by the complete absence . of science and the brutal weight of faith the Witch is also an invitation, absolute seduction, temptation maximum described in one sentence: wouldst thou like to live deliciously?

  1. Anomalisa – Dir: Charlie Kauffman

Anomalisa is a fascinating game simulation and simulation, a mindfuck bright beauty difficult to describe yet be turned into a scathing and disturbing nightmare, as disturbing as beautiful at once. A painful exploration of loneliness, modernity and mundane.

  1. The Lobster – Dir: Yorgos Lanthimos

The best film so far in 2016 is one that not even opened in theaters ( You can see in iTunes or Cinépolis Klic). The Lobster is a critical brutal hell of human relationships, the idea that we can not be alone, we need necessarily to partner, by any means . Satire is powerful, in this fictional world where it is forbidden to have no relationship, current obsessions of a society are recognized Tinderizada where the choice of a couple hangs a picture and a swipe to the right, where the fear of loneliness factory relationships based on false scaffolding, where the minimum affinity is enough to establish a “stable” relationship. Self – deception which replaces love.

The sharp knife Lanthimos also reaches the opposite: those who make solitude a sect that hates matched that of the extreme independence that creates unable beings to feel some affinity with anyone, perhaps not with themselves.

Human ridiculousness is a perfect drawing Lanthimos films, we can only laugh and recognize.
